Book Summary of Boardwalk Empire\nThe Birth, High Times and the Corruption of\nAtlantic City

Through most of the twentieth century, Atlantic City was controlled by a powerful partnership of local politicians and racketeers. Funded by payoffs from gambling rooms, bars and brothels, this corrupt alliance reached full bloom during the reign of Enoch 'Nucky' Johnson - the second of the three bosses to head the Republican machine that dominated city politics and society.

In Boardwalk Empire, Nucky Johnson, Louis 'the Commodore' Kuehnle, Frank 'Hap' Farley, and Atlantic City itself spring to life in all their garish splendour. Author Nelson Johnson traces 'AC' from its birth as a quiet seaside health resort, through the notorious backroom politics and power struggles, to the city's rebirth as an international entertainment and gambling mecca where anything goes.

Boardwalk Empire is the true story that inspired the epic HBO series starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt and Kelly Macdonald.

About the Author
Nelson Johnson's family lived in Atlantic County before the city was founded, and he is himself a lifelong resident of Hammonton, New Jersey. He practiced law for 30 years, and was attorney for the Atlantic City Planning Board at the time many applications for the building of the casinos were approved. Fascinated by the complicated history of Atlantic City, Nelson spent almost two decades interviewing, researching and writing to create Boardwalk Empire.

Julie April 05, 2011 review from Goodreads

Boardwalk Empire is an interesting, and enjoyable, if rather uneven, read. Victims of this, most recent, recession economy will undoubtedly be interested to know that Atlantic Cityâ??s initial development and success was brought on, not by the nationâ??s wealthiest vacations, but rather, by blue coll...

Jack October 19, 2010 review from Goodreads

A pretty good local history with some odd detractions. The book is most valuable for its study of Atlantic City's republican political machine. People looking for a novelization of the HBO series will be disappointed there's only one chapter on Nucky Johnson and the twenties, and its more about p...

The Library Lady April 07, 2011 review from Goodreads

No, this isn't a pot boiler full of sex, violence and perfect looking people. That's the highly entertaining, fiction based on fact TV series, and this is not the novelization of that show. What this is is the whole history of Atlantic City, from its founding as a health resort, its success mainly...

Kemper September 24, 2011 review from Goodreads

If fans of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire read this hoping just for more stories about corrupt politicians, gangsters, bootlegging, sex, violence, and a disfigured hit man, theyâ??re probably going to be disappointed. However, anyone looking for an interesting history of Atlantic City from its hum...
