Book Summary of Gaban: The Stolen Jewels

Gaban, first published in 1931, five years before Premchand s death, gives us a fascinating glimpse of north Indian society, and especially of the author s own Kayasth community. But this novel also serves to put forth his own deeply-held views of the ills of that society - the insatiable love of its women for personal adornment, its failure to create fulfilling marriage relationships, and its moral corruption. This is a felicitous translation by Christopher R. King and will enable many readers to appreciate Premchand s important novel, available for the first time in English

'Gaban' (embezzlement) was my second book by Premchand, it was perhaps, my second Hindi novel. This may come as a surprise to my Western peers but such is the sorry state of affairs of Hindi literature in the most predominantly Hindi speaking region of the world. Even here, you would do well just...

Another masterpiece by Premchand. Greatest thing about his stories is the simplicity and close to reality feeling. You feel as if things are happening all around you. Characters have flaws like we all have. This story starts with mention of necklace and obsession of women with gold and necklace....

Daljit July 19, 2012 review from Goodreads

A slow start but becomes better as the story progresses. The story shows how we can fall for materialistic things and without caring for the consequences we just want to fulfil our wishes. This also shows that when our heart changes and we realize what we were doing, to what extent we can go and...
