Dr. Purshottam Mahadeo Joshi, an ardent student of mediaeval deccan history helped to promote research in this field in various capacities like librarian, records keeper and teacher. The present volume which is dedicated to him by his friends contains many research papers and a few original documents relating to various aspects like Region, Society and Culture, Economy, Polity and Administration of the history of deccan. Dr. V. K. R. V. Rao and Dr. D. N. Marshall have recorded their appreciation of Dr. Joshi as man and scholar and his former assistant in the State Archives has meticulously compiled his contributions to historical research.Dr. Romila Thapar in her scholarly article underlies the importance of regional history with emphasis on the history of Konkan. The section on Society and Culture has been enriched by the articles of M. S. Siddiqi, Omar Khaldi, and Carl W. Ernst, Dharma Kumar, G. S. Dikshit, Meera Kosambi, T. R. de Souza, A. R. Kulkarni, Om Prakash and M. A. Nayeem have done some fresh studies on the economic aspects of Deccan based mainly on original archival source material. This volume also contains a few essays on the polity and administration of the Deccan written by eminent scholars like Z. A. Desai, S. V. Sohoni, M. N. Pearson, J. V. Naik, V. K. Bawa, N. K. Wagle, R. G. S. Cooper and Stewart Gordon.These fresh studies, it is hoped, would certainly help scholars in understanding the various aspects of Deccan history.
