Book Summary of Temple And The Lodge, The

In this enthralling historical detective story, the authors of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail trace the flight after 1309 of the Knights Templar from Europe to Scotland, where the Templar heritage was to take root, and would be perpetuated by a network of noble families. That heritage, and the Freemasonry that arose from it, became inseparable from the Stuart cause. The Temple and the Lodge charts the birth of Freemasonry through the survival of Templar traditions, through currents of European thought, through the mystery surrounding Rosslyn chapel, and through an elite cadre of aristocrats attached as personal bodyguards to the French king. Pursuing Freemasonry through the 17th and 18th Centuries, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh reveal its contribution to the fostering of tolerance, progressive values, and cohesion in English society, which helped to pre-empt a French-style revolution. Even more dramatically, the influence of Freemasonry emerges as key facto in the formation of the United States of America as an embodiment of the ideal 'Masonic Republic'.

Kenneth June 19, 2009 review from Goodreads

The holy templars were the forebears of the masonic lodge. Using some fact with some embellishment this author builds on that to try and paint a picture of history. According to this book George Washington wasn't really a hero. The Revolutionary War was planned out for who would win. How does thi...

Hywel September 23, 2010 review from Goodreads

I really wanted to dislike this book, as it has been panned as sensationalist. However, this appears to be mostly an opinion held by people who haven't actually read it. Whilst the book is speculative, it is nonetheless very interesting, and puts forward some plausible arguments, even if they are...

Catherine Grace May 03, 2011 review from Goodreads

Opened my mind to an area I had never been exposed to other than that of the typical "conspiracy theorist's" mania. I found it very helpful personally and I particularly jive with Baigent's seeming passion of subject, and yet, balanced approach in perspective and presentation. Just started anothe...

Matthew October 15, 2009 review from Goodreads

This was a very well written book, but as all books about the origins of Freemasonry it only raises (no pun intended) more questions.

Barry December 23, 2008 review from Goodreads

One of my first masonic books....I still love it
