Book Summary of Through the Forest Darkly

A gripping tale of the death of idealism, this elegantly written, quietly ironical novel uses slices from the life of middle-aged Avinash – who once briefly in his youth had a brush with the Naxalite movement – as a foil to the life of his son, Aseem, a cocky young corporate – barely able to conceal his contempt for his father’s undistinguished life. But then Aseem is forced by his love for his activist girlfriend to question the values of his own…
Aseem’s girlfriend Swati, a Maoist sympathizer works among slum children. Through her, he comes in contact with Gopal, a revolutionary leader operating among the adibasis in the Maoist-controlled deep forests of Bastar. There, in the self-styled praja courts where instant ‘justice’ is meted out, at the front in the war the Maoists have been waging against the state, Aseem finds himself at the same crossroads as his father.
A brilliant commentary on the underpinnings of contemporary society and politics and its inability to comprehend the enormity of the problems of the poor and the marginalized.
